Fund Adopted Modified Adopted vs. Modified

About

Where's the money going?

Every year New York City adopts an expense budget of well over $100 billion—$114.4 billion for Fiscal Year 2026. It funds the public schools, sanitation, policing, fire protection, public health, housing, parks, and hundreds of other services New Yorkers rely on every day. Its funding comes from you: your income and property taxes, sales taxes, fees, and intergovernmental aid.

This tool lets you explore that budget by agency and unit of appropriation, and compare each agency's adopted budget against its modified budget, across Fiscal Years 2017 through 2027. Have a question about where the money goes? Check out the FAQ.

On our use of AI. The code behind this project was written with the help of an AI coding assistant (Anthropic's Claude), directed and reviewed by BetaNYC staff. We tell you this because transparency is part of BetaNYC's AI policy: we explain when and how we use these tools.

What AI did and did not do here matters. AI helped us write the software that loads the City's published budget data and builds this visualization. It did not read, interpret, or generate any of the dollar figures. Every number comes straight from NYC Open Data's Expense Budget dataset, unchanged. A person reviewed the result before it was published. The AI assisted the work; BetaNYC remains accountable for it.

Data comes from NYC Open Data's Expense Budget dataset (mwzb-yiwb). For each fiscal year we use the Adopted (June) budget snapshot. "Adopted" is the budget as adopted by the City; "Modified" is the current modified budget amount recorded at that snapshot.
