Explore New York City's expense budget from Fiscal Year 2017 to 2027 and see how the money is adopted and modified across city agencies.
Every dollar shown here comes from NYC Open Data's Expense Budget dataset (dataset id mwzb-yiwb), published by the City. It is public, and this tool reads it directly. New York City's fiscal year runs from July 1 to June 30, and the budget for each fiscal year is published several times as it moves through the year: a Preliminary budget (January), an Executive budget (April/May), and the Adopted budget (June). For each fiscal year, this tool uses the Adopted (June) snapshot.
The dataset carries two dollar amounts for each budget line. Adopted is the amount adopted for that fiscal year (the dataset's adopted_budget_amount field). Modified is the current modified budget amount recorded at that same snapshot (the dataset's current_modified_budget_amount field), which reflects changes made to the budget after adoption. The two chart lines let you compare the two. For Fiscal Year 2026, for example, the city's adopted total was $114.4 billion while the modified total was $123.8 billion.
That is the range of fiscal years currently available in the published Expense Budget dataset. As the City publishes new fiscal years, the underlying data file can be regenerated and the range extended.
This tool reuses DataMade's Look at Cook front-end, which organizes a budget into a top-level grouping ("Fund") and a sub-grouping ("Department"). Here, Fund is the city agency (for example, the Department of Education or the Police Department), and Department is the agency's unit of appropriation — the line-item grouping the City uses to break an agency's budget into parts. In this first version the secondary "control officer" view mirrors the agency view; a richer second dimension may be added later.
Because each fiscal year is published multiple times and each publication restates the entire budget, simply adding every row would count the same money more than once. To avoid that, this tool keeps only the Adopted (latest) snapshot for each fiscal year, then sums the budget lines within it. As a check, the Fiscal Year 2026 adopted total comes to $114,384,991,832 — matching the City's published adopted expense budget for that year.
