DRAFT. First pass, 2026-07-06. The two core links below need a BetaNYC staff member to fill in the live URL — placeholders are marked clearly. Do not publish this file externally until they’re filled in.
Understanding open data doesn’t require reading this repo’s technical guides first — BetaNYC and partner organizations run recurring public classes that build the same foundational literacy for a general audience.
Core classes
Introduction to NYC Open Data
BetaNYC’s recurring digital literacy class, covering both NYC and NYS open data — what it is, where to find it, and how to start exploring it without a technical background.

Open Data Ambassadors Program
A program run by the NYC Mayor’s Office of Technology and Innovation (OTI), which BetaNYC supports — open-data classes delivered across all 51 City Council Districts, building open-data literacy at the neighborhood level.

Suggested additional training material for review
These are candidates worth evaluating for inclusion — not yet vetted or confirmed as current/active. Flagging for a follow-up pass:
- NYC School of Data — recurring annual conference with multiple past sessions specifically on discovering/exploring NYC Open Data (e.g., “Discovering NYC Open Data: An Introduction”). Worth linking to the current School of Data program page.
- NYC Open Data Week — annual week of sessions, several of which are introductory open-data classes; worth linking to the current year’s program.
- Data & Society’s AI Civics — referenced as a content partner in BetaNYC’s own “Introduction to Artificial Intelligence (AI 101)” curriculum; may have standalone public materials worth citing.
- Socrata / Tyler Data & Insights developer docs (
dev.socrata.com) — the technical reference for the SoQL query language underlying both NYC and NYS portals; useful for anyone building past the beginner level. - NYC Council’s AICE (Artificial Intelligence Community Engagement) Initiative — another named curriculum partner for BetaNYC’s AI 101 class; may have its own public materials.
A note on scope
This file intentionally stays narrow to open data literacy training. BetaNYC’s broader digital-literacy class catalog (AI 101, Mapping for Equity data classes, etc.) is out of scope here — see BetaNYC’s own program pages for the full catalog.
